Here’s a quick comparison of fuel costs at some of the top European destinations. This is based on average fuel prices in December 2025.
1. Work out the distance you’ll be driving on your route, in kilometres (km).
2. Find out your car’s average fuel consumption - for example, 6.0 litres/100km.
3. Budget for your trip, as follows: (Distance ÷ 100) × Consumption × Local fuel price per litre.
It’s probably a good idea to add 10% for detours, traffic and air-con, which can use up fuel faster on hot days in the car.
Also, you might need to travel with a mixture of cash and cards to pay for your fuel, food and other things while driving in Europe.
