              How to buy Turkish Lira

You can buy Turkish Lira in different ways, either online or over the counter. There are a few things to think about if you want to exchange pounds to Turkish Lira.

                Where to buy Turkish Lira

Supermarkets are a practical choice. They can be more competitive than banks on day-to-day rates. And there’s the added convenience of click & collect and home delivery as well.

With Tesco Travel Money, there are even more great reasons to buy online or in-store. For example:

With Tesco Travel Money, you can order Euros online for Click+Collect or Home Delivery.

You can buy your Euros in cash. Or, for more convenience, you can add Euros to our Multi-currency Cash Passport prepaid currency card.

With a mix of cash and card, you’ll be covered for different situations.

Should you buy Turkish Lira in the UK or in Turkey?

It's usually better to buy Turkish Lira before you travel, rather than waiting until you land. You'll typically get a better exchange rate ordering online or in-store than you would at the airport. And with Tesco Travel Money, you'll get a better rate on foreign currency with your Clubcard. T&Cs apply.

The Turkish Lira has been prone to bigger swings than currencies like the Euro or US Dollar in recent years, so rates can move noticeably in the run-up to a trip. Buying ahead, rather than leaving it to the last minute, can help you lock in a rate rather than gamble on it changing in your favour.

How far could your Turkish Lira go?

You can do some practical things to make your money go further in Turkey. For example:

Where can you use Turkish Lira?

Turkish Lira (TRY) is the official currency of Turkey, and it's what you'll need for the vast majority of everyday spending.

Card or cash? Turkey has become increasingly card-friendly. Contactless payments are common in cities, hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, and most tourist businesses take Visa and Mastercard. However, it's still worth carrying cash for:

                      • Local markets, small shops, barbers, hairdressers, street food and tea housesLocal markets, small shops, barbers, hairdressers, street food and tea houses
                      • Taxis and dolmuş (shared minibuses), especially outside major citiesTaxis and dolmuş (shared minibuses), especially outside major cities

                      • Rural areas and smaller towns, where card terminals are less commonRural areas and smaller towns, where card terminals are less common

A mix of cash and card tends to work best, so you're not caught out either way.

Using cards: You can make contactless payments with Apple Pay and Google Pay, or your card. When paying by card, you may be asked whether you want to pay in Lira or pounds - always choose Lira, as this avoids the often poor exchange rate applied by the "pay in your home currency" option.

Using ATMs: Cash machines are widely available in cities and tourist areas and accept UK cards. But bear in mind they usually have a withdrawal limit, and most will charge you every time you take out cash. Stick to ATMs at recognised banks where possible, and again, decline any offer to convert to pounds at the machine - accepting the Lira amount and letting your card provider handle the conversion is usually cheaper.

How to get the best buy back rates for Turkish Lira

                                    Some common questions about Lira

                                    Notes come in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Turkish Lira.

                                    There are six Turkish Lira coins: 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 kuruş, plus 1 Lira (100 kuruş = 1 Lira).

It’s worth remembering you can only exchange unused notes when you’re back home. Coins can’t be exchanged, so it’s best to spend them - or save them as a souvenir.

Unlike the Euro, Turkish Lira coins and notes don't vary by region or issuing country. The coins and notes are the same everywhere the Lira is used - Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

You can buy Turkish Lira at any Tesco Travel Money Bureau, and when you use your Clubcard, you’ll get an even better rate! For added convenience, you can order Lira online for Click+Collect or Home Delivery.

You can use Apple Pay or Google Pay to buy your currency in cash when you order your travel money online.

If you want to buy a Multi-currency Cash Passport prepaid currency card, you'll need to pay by credit or debit card.

Exchange rates may vary depending on whether you're buying in-store, online or over the phone. They'll also vary depending on whether you're buying cash or a prepaid currency card.

You can check our in-store exchange rates at a Tesco Travel Money Bureau.

                                                    • available on the day you buy your currency in-store

Price Match only applies in-store on a like-for-like basis on sell transactions. It doesn’t apply to exchange rates advertised online or by phone.

This is not available in conjunction with any other offer. We reserve the right to check the rate you’ve found and the 3-mile distance from our store (using a standard route planning tool).

Clubcard Prices are available on the sell rate only for currencies in stock online, on your date of purchase. Exchange rates may vary whether buying in store, online or by phone.

Due to constant market and currency fluctuations, rates on the date of purchase cannot be compared to another day’s rates. The actual rate you receive may vary depending on market fluctuations. Clubcard data is captured by Travelex on behalf of Tesco Travel Money.

                                                          Our Buy Back Promise

You can add our Buy Back Promise when you buy your travel money from us online or in-store. Our Buy Back Promise costs just £2.75 if you’re a Clubcard member or £2.99 if you’re not.
